Frequently Asked Questions

What is acne?

Acne is very common skin health issues that can appear with pimples and spots (these are called 'inflamed lesion') and/or non-inflamed lesions like blackheads and whiteheads (so-called comedones).

Acne has traditionally been classed as a 'sebaceous gland disorder' which means that the skin's oil glands are involved in one form or another. Today, it is viewed more as chronic inflammatory skin conditions, as there is a low grade of inflammation (micro-inflammation) present in the skin.

Our dermatologists can help design an acne treatment plan specific to your skin.

Why does acne need treatment?

Even though spots and pimples are very common, both in teenagers and adults, don't accept them as a normal part of your life! Even mild acne  can have a huge negative impact on confidence, quality of life and even be linked to depression. The good news is however that treatment is quite straightforward in the majority of cases, so no reason to keep enduring it.

Acne breakouts can even leave permanent scarring (what other scarring facial skin condition would you accept just like that!), another reason to get medical treatment early.

Please try not to fix acne yourself with over-the-counter remedies or cosmetic treatments, but seek out professional help.

Why should acne be treated early?

The first step is to accept that you actually have a skin disease and not to underestimate it. Breakouts are often viewed as 'one of those things' you have to put up with, even some sort of cruel rite of passage for teenagers - but they are not!

Acne is a potentially disfiguring skin condition predominantly affecting the central face. Think about it - the face is usually the first skin area other people see when speaking to you. Here, at Eudelo we strongly feel that everybody deserves to present themselves in the best way possible and feel good about their skin. There are enough other things we need to worry about. Let your skin not be one of them. Acne even has the potential to leave permanent scarring.

Breakouts at any age are simply a sign that your skin is not happy and healthy, and needs help.

Getting advice from one of our qualified dermatologists is the quickest way to get your acne better.

It's also important to ensure that whether you are an adult or a teenager, you are not making your situation worse by using skincare products or other beauty products that might aggravate the condition and may contribute to lasting damage. We are able to help you by putting together a skincare regime that's supporting your dermatology treatment, which is the gold standard in our opinion. And, if that's of interest, they can even add effective anti-ageing products that will not upset your skin.

Is is worth making an appointment even if I have seen other doctors already?

Absolutely. With more than 100 years of combined experience, our experts have developed a unique system to treat acne. We have had many patients who have seen other doctors without much avail, but are finally enjoying clear skin after getting treatment with us.

Just one example - what we unfortunately often see is that GPs and other non-dermatologist doctors tend to prescribe a single acne cream, which often disappoints. In our professional experience of treating thousands of acne patients over the years, most respond better to a clever combination of different prescription creams: one cream in the morning and another in the evening, say, or different products on different days of the week. A tailored regime like this yields far better results.

Plus, it's absolutely crucial to not only use prescription creams on their own, but also get your skincare regime (for example - what cleanser, sun protection and moisturiser should you use?) optimised. Sadly, if you ask a beauty therapist who has not been trained by an expert dermatologist to recommend skincare products (or worse - follow the advice of a sales representative at a beauty counter of a department store…), these products will make your acne worse in many cases.

We have seen it all - even skincare products specifically developed and marketed for acne, are wholly unsuitable in many cases.

Can acne be treated?

Yes!

The great news is that we have highly effective treatments for acne breakouts, including a variety of all sorts of different prescription creams, as well as various prescription tablets, if needed, such as anti-inflammatories, antibiotics and specialist vitamin A acid tablets.

Our dermatologist will put together an advanced prescription treatment regime specifically for you. We can also tailor a customised skincare regime (for example - what cleanser, sun protection and moisturiser should you use?) around the prescription treatment. We can even add effective anti-ageing products that will not upset your skin, if that's of interest.

This approach is unique. We can't stress enough how important it is to address and optimise both angles! Either one on their own is much less likely to help.

What treatments are there for Acne

There is a large variety of highly effective anti-acne creams available on prescription from our dermatologists. In most patients, a clever combination of topical products will be all you need to clear your acne.

However, for cases where topical treatment alone is not enough, we may add certain acne antibiotic or anti-androgenic tablets.

As an alternative oral treatment, there are also vitamin A derivatives which can be valuable treatments and can switch off acne for good or for a long time, in the majority of patients.

These derivatives used to be prescribed in higher daily doses with a high chance of side effects, such as severely dry skin and lips. We now know that this medication can still be very effective in much lower daily doses (the exact dose depends on the patient and their bodyweight) which makes treatment far more tolerable, albeit a little longer in duration.

How quickly can I get rid of my spots?

In nearly all cases, acne can be improved within a few weeks, meaning you may start feeling the benefits of the treatment on your daily life quite quickly.

However, acne tends to need a little more time than some other skin conditions to respond to treatment, so trust the process and don't get impatient. Good results often take about two to three months.

During your initial consultation with one of our dermatologists, they will recommend a tailored regime of prescription creams, and in some cases tablets. We will also look at your current skincare regime to see whether changes need to be made for best results. We will then put together an optimised skincare regime that works in harmony with your prescription treatment. Looking at both prescription creams and skincare is really important.

We may also recommend regular Dermatology Grade Facials to support your acne treatment. This is usually a highly beneficial addition to your prescription treatment.

Addressing acne in this comprehensive, 'holistic' way means it usually responds quicker than with just prescription treatment or skincare changes alone, and the treatment success is much better maintained, too.

Can acne be cured?

Acne is considered a chronic skin condition. Various factors will influence your skin condition, including genetics, hormones, environmental factors, diet, skincare as well as stress and emotional wellbeing.

However, the good news is that we can treat and control acne really well these days, so it may not be visible for anybody that you are in fact acne prone.

Our multidisciplinary team of dermatologists and therapists will tackle your acne from all different angles necessary to try and achieve as well as maintain your clear skin.

Is there any downtime with the treatment?

Typically there is no downtime with any of the prescription treatments, skincare or Dermatology Grade Facials. However, everyone's skin is different and sometimes there may be some temporary dryness or flaking, while the treatment is being optimised, which is easy to fix.

Should there be any unexpected reaction, rest assured that you are in safe hands with our expert team of dermatologists.

I am an adult sufferer, can I be treated?

Yes! If you're an adult sufferer of acne and have passed the time when acne usually clears naturally, then don't worry - you are far from alone. Our comprehensive treatment plans will still greatly improve or clear your breakouts. There are a number of different treatments available for adult acne sufferers that generally lead to very positive results.

It's never too late to start treatment. And even if you have seen other practitioners with disappointing results in the past, don't worry, we have lots of patients just like you who, after decades of suffering, finally have clear skin.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Appointments can be arranged via our reception (on 020 7118 9500)
6 days a week. Dermatologist availability will naturally vary, however, you can usually get to see the expert in the same week, often the very next day.

Are all your practitioners fully qualified and insured?

Yes, all our dermatologists are fully qualified with a General Medical Council (GMC) license to practice and are fully insured.

Whether you have a medical skin condition which needs treatment, or simply want to look your best, our specialised dermatology team will help you achieve the very best result.
